Synopsis[]

Yoko begins to feel left out because the other kids find her Asian culture weird, and different. Mrs. Jenkins decides to come up with a cultural event to help broaden their way of thinking.

Plot[]

Yoko is woken by her mother for another exciting day of school, filled with all of her favorite things. Her mom gets her lunch and they exchange farewells before she gets onto the bus, and she greets Henry before going back to sit with Timothy.

Once at school, the day begins with a game of dress-up, followed by reading time and eventually lunch. Everyone gets their food and sits down to start trading their things; but nobody wants anything Yoko has. Timothy explains that she's the only one who likes sushi, and the other students begin to overhear them. They remark on how strange it looks and get disgusted, and they start teasing her.

Yoko remains depressed and once everyone leaves for recess, Mrs. Jenkins realizes she has been crying. She checks on Yoko and after finding out what happened, she expresses that there is nothing wrong with her food. She invites Yoko to eat lunch with her for the time being and they sit together at her desk.

Later, the same thing happens when they sit down for snack time and Yoko reveals the red bean ice-cream she has. Doris observes it and she remains unimpressed, with Yoko being unable to understand why it's so strange, everyone likes ice-cream. She still feels sad, and Mrs. Jenkins begins to think about what she can do to help her out. She comes up with an idea and once the school day ends, she hands each student a paper to give to their parents. She assures Yoko that this will fix everything.

As her mom overlooks the paper, Yoko folds some paper cranes. Her mom explains that their class will be holding an "International Food Day" tomorrow, so everyone is requested to bring in some food from their cultures and try other foods. Yoko suggests they do something normal like cheeseburgers, but her mom believes that for this occasion, they should make deluxe sushi, much to her concern.

The following day, everyone sets up their various dishes and reminds them the importance of being open-minded and trying everything. Timothy joins Yoko to see what she brought, but he is repelled and heads off to try the other foods; but he keeps getting distracted by the next dish being offered; from the enchiladas brought by Charles, to the Nigerian nut soup Grace has, Fritz's spaghetti, Doris's stew, Claude's smoothies, the Franks' Boston baked beans -which they ate already- and lastly Nora's potato knishes. By the time he finally makes up his mind, everything has been eaten.

Mrs. Jenkins begins to clean up as Timothy approaches Yoko to ask her how she enjoyed the day. Yoko is disappointed because nobody wanted to try what she made. Timothy admits he didn't get to eat anything, and now he's really hungry. With recess being called, Mrs. Jenkins encourages Yoko to go play and apologizes for things not working out the way she hoped. Yoko sits down to mope until she realizes Timothy is trying to use the chopsticks she brought. He would try anything since he's so hungry now. Yoko gently takes the chopsticks and shows him how to use them, picking up a piece of sushi and eating it. Timothy picks up a piece and eats it, and he is very surprised because he likes it. Yoko perks up and they start eating together, Mrs. Jenkins is very happy by the turn of events.

Quotes[]

  • Doris: Why can't your mother make you something normal?

---

  • Timothy: I didn't get to try anything. Not Grace's Nigerian nut soup, Fritz's Italian spaghetti, Doris' Irish stew, Claude's mango smoothie, Nora's potato knish, Charles' enchiladas, Lily's quiche, or the Franks' Boston baked beans!
  • Yoko: And you did not try my deluxe sushi either! No one tried it! - not even one piece!

Trivia[]

  • This episode is based on the book of the same name.
  • The red beans Yoko mentions are called Adzuki.
  • The scene of Claude and the Franks wearing dress-up hats is repeated from the 1st episode. However, Frank 2's hat is different.
  • The foods everyone brought included:
    • Timothy - Caribbean coconut crisps
    • Yoko - Deluxe sushi
    • Franks - Boston baked beans
    • Fritz - Spaghetti
    • Charles - Enchiladas
    • Grace - Nigerian nut soup
    • Doris - Irish stew
    • Claude - Mango smoothies
    • Nora - Potato knishes
    • Lily - Quiche
  • On Qubo, the following scenes were edited out or shortened:
    • Timothy observes Doris's stew, then looks through the steam rising from it to see Claude serving drinks.
    • After the Franks eat their food, Timothy spots a single knish on the plate, as does Nora. But he gets distracted by Mrs. Jenkins and turns to see that Charles has picked it up before either of them could get it. He chases after him, then stops upon seeing Yoko.
    • When Mrs. Jenkins apologizes to Yoko she suggests that she goes out to play while she cleans up. Yoko refuses and walks away. On Quobo the scene is shortened to her apologizing and saying she will be cleaning as Yoko walks away.

Errors[]

  • As Mrs. Jenkins asks to see what Yoko has for lunch, the rainbow in the picture behind them changes color before she walks back to her desk.
  • During the event at school, there appears to be two pots of baked beans at the table near each other. However, the Franks were only shown with one when Timothy approaches them.
  • The design on Yoko's blanket doesn't stay consistent at the beginning.
  • In the first episode, Timothy boards the bus after Yoko, but in this episode he was already on when she was boarding it.
  • During the nap scene, Charles' and Nora's whiskers were missing.
  • When Yoko was on the floor the first time, her tail wasn't visible.
    • Towards the end of the episode when it is, she shifts movement and it sticks out from the side, when it should be sticking out from her skirt.
  • The sandwich Claude got from Nora was peanut butter and honey. But the "peanut butter" looks like lettuce.
  • Although the letter said "everyone must try everything", that didn't actually happen. Nobody except for Timothy tried Yoko's food, and Timothy was unable to try anything else because it got eaten by the time he finally made up his mind.
  • The origami swan Yoko made vanishes after she suggests they make cheeseburgers.
  • Lily took an enchilada near the bottom. But as Timothy lines up to try one, none are shown missing.
  • As Nora and Timothy watch Charles walk away with the knish, Nora is missing her whiskers.
  • Next to the knish plate was two glasses of drink and a fork. As Timothy runs up to the plate, the fork is missing and the glass has changed places.
