"Timothy Goes to School" is the first episode of the animated series. It is the animated adaption of a story with the same name.

Synopsis[]

Timothy is old enough to start attending school, and he's very excited! But one of his classmates doesn't like him, so Timothy attempts to earn his approval.

Plot[]

One day Timothy is in his bedroom drawing when his parents arrive with a letter for him- an invitation to attend Hilltop School Kindergarten. Timothy asks if he can go and his mother confirms that he can, but his dad reminds him that he has to wait until tomorrow. Timothy is so excited that he starts getting his things together and look for an outfit to wear, but his mom has that ready, revealing the outfit she made for him. Timothy thanks her and soon he gets tucked into bed. He's so excited that it takes him a little while to fall asleep.

The next morning, Timothy gets ready and rushes outside to the school-bus. But he starts worrying after he realizes that he might not know anyone, until his mom assures him that he does know someone: Doris. Timothy isn't very happy and his classmates curiously observe him as he steps onto the bus and meets the driver, Henry. Along the way to join Doris towards the back of the bus, Timothy perks up as he walks by a girl cat who greets him.

Everyone excitedly looks around until their Teacher -Mrs. Jenkins- calls for their attention and brings them over to the sit down spot. She plays the piano for them and has everyone take turns introducing themselves, then she decides to have them start the class doing some drawings. Things go well until Timothy compliments the picture made by another raccoon, who observes Timothy and remarks on his clothing. Timothy feels disappointed for the remainder of the day, and his parents are concerned once he returns home. His mom asks what happened and she offers to pick out something formal for him to wear the next day at school.

Timothy cheers up thinking this will solve everything, but the next day at school, Claude criticizes him for being overdressed. By this point, when he gets home Timothy tells his mom that he doesn't want to go back to school. She offers to let Timothy pick something out himself, and convinces him to give it a try. Timothy chooses his favorite blue and white striped shirt.

The next day at school Timothy finds everyone playing and he is joined by the cat girl he met on the bus, Yoko, and Charles, a shy mouse. They invite him to play with them but Timothy is more concerned over what Claude thinks of this outfit and goes off to locate him. He feels better realizing they have the same shirt on, but Claude gets irritated, saying that Timothy chose to wear something similar to him and walks off. Timothy feels saddened by this, until he sees the football the other guys were playing with is heading right for Yoko. He calls out to her and rushes to her side, only for Claude to shove him aside and catch the football.

Claude heads off and Yoko helps Timothy, remarking on how much of a show-off Claude is, and he thinks he knows everything. Timothy realizes that she is right, realizing that because he was so worried over what he thought, he wasn't enjoying himself like he could have been. Yoko is happy he feels better now, and she invites him to come over to her house and play after school. Timothy agrees and they run off to play tag.

Lesson[]

Timothy learned that he should have been enjoying himself, rather than worry over what one classmate thought about him. By being himself he made a friend and had fun.

Trivia[]

  • The opening song for the series uses modified clips from this episode.
  • Prior to attending school, Doris and Timothy are the only un-related children implied to know each other.
  • According to the clock, for his first day of school Timothy left home at 11:17 am.

Qubo Edits:

  • The scene of Timothy talking with his mom before she reveals the overalls she made was shortened.

Book Differences[]

  • Timothy cries twice in the book. At one point while at school, and at one point when he gets home and seeks comfort from his mom.
  • At one point Timothy wishes something embarrassing would happen to Claude, such as him falling in mud or making a mistake.
  • Originally, the book ended with Timothy befriending a girl named Violet (who is similar to Yoko) and ignored Claude and Grace for laughing at them.

Errors[]

  • As Timothy is drawing, he has a red, pink, white and black colored pencils in the box. Inches from it were brown, purple and cyan pencils. However, when he is shown drawing from the back, the three colored pencils away from the box are now purple, brown and fuchsia. The cyan colored pencil is in a different spot.
  • When the children sit on the shapes, Nora sat on a square and Fritz is on the triangle. As Mrs. Jenkins sings and the camera pans around them, Nora is on a triangle and Fritz is now on a circle.
  • A line was added to Timothy's sun drawing that he was not shown making.
  • The envelope front was facing Timothy as his mom showed it to him. But before he sees it, the back is now facing him.
  • The flowers in the planter in front of Timothy's room change throughout the bedroom scene. Originally there was a few red flowers scattered around. When he looks out the window later, a lot more were added. From an inside view, there are other colored flowers among the red ones.
  • Yoko was drawing in green, but her drawing is grey.
  • Timothy's mother has brown feet, but during a scene when she sits with Timothy on his bed they are dark brown.
  • When Timothy takes his colored pencils out, the box is turned up. When the camera zooms in on his hand for him to open the container, it was upside down.
    • Also note that when Timothy opens the container, a variety of colors are visible. But when they fall out, they all turned fuchsia, lavender, orange, blue, red and yellow.
    • When the camera zooms out, only two colored pencils are near him, even though he dumped the entire set out. When Timothy decides to draw the school as well, the ones dumped out are next to him.
  • Nora is on the swing set near the end of the episode. When Timothy goes to show Claude they have the same shirt on, she is suddenly gone. When the ball rolls near Timothy after, she is on it again.
  • When Timothy sits down with Grace and Doris on the carpet, they appear smaller than him. But Doris is the biggest kid in class, and Grace is around the same height as Timothy.
