Synopsis[]

Yoko is delighted after her mother agrees to let her take the Netsuke dolls to class. But as she prepares to leave school she discovers they went missing!

Plot[]

One day Yoko and her mother are looking through a photo album. Yoko notices her grandmother in her wedding photo, and her mother points out the Netsuke doll on her sash. She gets up to fetch a small box containing a full Netsuke family, and she explains how it was passed down between generations. Kiko, the youngest of the dolls was the one seen in the picture. Her grandfather would carve Netsuke dolls in his spare time when he wasn't fishing. He was one of the most talented carvers in their village. After marriage, he gave Yoko's grandmother the Netsuke family as a present. Years later, she was given them, and one day she will give them to Yoko.

Yoko is amazed and asks if she can take them to school to show her friends. Her mother worriedly refuses, but Yoko convinces her that she will keep them safe. Her mom relents and agrees to let Yoko take them, as long as she keeps an eye on them.

The next day Yoko shows everyone the dolls, taking out each one and explaining their importance and who they represent in their family. Once she is done she puts them away, and her classmates quickly begin to request seeing them and playing with them. Yoko refuses and asks if she can put them away now, and Mrs. Jenkins agrees. The class moves onto playtime, and Yoko is making replicas of the Netsuke family along with Lily, Timothy and nora. They allow the Franks to play with these ones as Mrs. Jenkins observes them.

By the time school ends everybody is preparing to board the bus when Timothy realizes Yoko isn't there. Mrs. Jenkins locates her within the cubby room and points out the time. Yoko is panicked as she explains the Netsuke family went missing. Mrs. Jenkins feels remorseful for her, but because they can't hold up the bus any longer, she offers to call her mom and explain what happened for her. Yoko sadly agrees and boards the bus.

She remains depressed as she explains to her mom what happened after she gets home, stating that she took good care of them and kept them safe. Her mom assures her that she isn't mad because she knows Yoko did her best, and she is sure that things will work out. Mrs. Jenkins and her talked, and they will spend the next day searching for them. Yoko perks up and at school the following day, the entire class gets to work searching throughout the classroom, including their belongings. Unfortunately, while her classmates were able to locate some of their own missing items, they couldn't find any sign of the Netsuke family. Yoko feels sad as they start to wonder if someone in class stole the figures. Mrs. Jenkins is quick to point out that if someone took them, they must realize by now how hurt Yoko is, and hopefully will return them to her.

Yoko sadly lays in bed as her mother tucks her in, having brought her a drink. She admits that it is possible someone took them, but she thinks they will bring them back because they are her friends. Yoko hopes so too, and she forces herself to go to bed.

The next day, Yoko arrives to school and begins to put away her items when she locates the Netsuke family. She opens their case with relief and to her surprise, she spots a candy heart inside with "sorry" written on it. She happily reveals this to Timothy, and mentions that while she doesn't know who did it- she's just glad they brought them back.
